Some of you may know that we have the pleasure and honor of having Professor Dwayne Simpson here in the UK at the moment. He is with us in the North West for a couple of weeks.
You can Google Professor Dwayne Simpson – Institute of Behavioral Research (IBR) at Texas Christian University (TCU) – and get an avalanche of hits. Dwayne has been involved in treatment outcome studies for almost 40 years and his institute is coming up for its 50th anniversary. Some of us had the privilege of spending a couple of hours with Dwayne this morning with more to come. His diary is absolutely crammed so I will try and share any pearls of wisdom with you as Dwayne’s visit develops. The first 'nugget' is that ITEP and BTEI (if that means anything to you) and mapping etc are all parts of a much bigger picture. The bigger picture (the umbrella or the outer Russian doll or the big tent) Dwayne is calling RELS (Recovery Engagement and Life Skills). They (IBR, TCU) have been doing this for years. I will keep you posted.

Thanks Mark.
I know that Phil Conley was planning an itinerary for the Prof in the North West (maybe further afield too) for his visit.
Can you tell us of any open access/public events?
Cheers
Simon

I have just googled him and do not want to make any assumptions (but it is hard not too from his literature) - what is his main message and why is he here? Thinking behind my question is that I personally prefer the UK than the US system

Hi Chris

As I understand it, Prof Simpson was very much the inspiration behind the NTORS research team's efforts. I saw him speak at an early NTORS conference back in 1999 alongside Gossop et al.

My impression is that he's been supportive of the ITEP project that is dear to the NTA, and has hosted visits by NTA NW colleagues such as Phil (Conley that is).

Other than that, I know not much more...

Cheers
Simon

Funny how it is acceptable to be disparaging of America and Americans for no other reason than where they come from.
As I recall was not Dr Dole from the other side of the pond?

I wasn't knocking it as I don't know much about it. I do know people will sell a way of working to make pots of money, look at the nursing process.

Plus my comment was about the US drug treatment system which I know a bit about rather than an individual + knows loads of great Americans - had dinner with Bob Newman couple of weeks ago - amazing man and a 'pupil' of Dole
