I am currently doing some research on specific treatment services that have been provided in the UK (and elsewhere!) to BME groups.

I wondered whether any members here had come across any such schemes or had specific experiences relating to this.

In particular I am interested in those designed to engage the Somali communities and again, in particular, those designed to support families.

Any links to research, present or past schemes or just anecdotal comment would be much appreciated!!!

Many thanks for your time!

Toby

Not an expert on this, but I remember there was a project in Tower Hamlets which worked on the issue of Khat and predominantly worked with Somalians and other East Africans. The staff I met were Somalian. Heather Walker from Tower Hamlets PCT will know the details.

Heather - are you still working with Somali people? I am struggling to know how to help a homeless Somali man in Leeds who is a heavy user of khat and frequently experiencing psychotic symptoms - mainstream psychiatry are not able to hold on to him since he frequently goes AWOL and our assertive outreach team exclude people with drug induced psychosis. This is something I can challenge, and will do so, but do have any other ideas? many thanks! Sally
