http://www.amazon.co.uk/Karchs-Pathology-Abuse-Steven-K...id=1216462437&sr=8-6 Well folks this should have been out quite some time ago, but mine is on order. I'm told a full chapter on Suboxone and also colour photographs. I'm getting all excited, no better book to take on a long holiday for by the pool reading - you do get a few strange looks though.
well I'm happy for you Si, bed time reading for you for the next 2 years. Thoroughly recommended reading for those who like to know everything. Impress your friends with tales of crack thumb and cauliflower ear as a symptom of opium dependency. I'll probably have a look at it too - though I'll probably use the library copy.

I am, like you, a big fan of Karch, and am thinking of asking for this for christmas.
However looking at the abstract it reminds me of his american base, with a chapter on Absinthe! I did not know much about absinthe. According to wikipedia, that is becuase it has never been illegal in the UK, so is not very exciting to us. However it has apparantly been banned in america, until last year, Quote "In 2007, TTB relaxed the US absinthe ban, and approved several brands for sale.[69] ..... A US distillery also began producing and selling absinthe, the first US company to do so since 1912. [72]"
I would take the need for a whole chapter on "suboxone" as also to do with its american base, unless it is a chapter on buprenorphine? I have still not felt a need to prescribe suboxone, as I have not yet met anyone with a persistant buprenorphine injecting problem.
I do have the last edition of Karch's excellent book, and enjoy its clear plain style. It will be useful to have a bit more on Khat.

Crack thumb - it doesn't have a code on EMIS. What about the picture of the Heart like a rugby ball from occasional cocaine use? I do hope that's in colour.

Hi Jude, Yes the chapter was on Suboxone - but I imagine that's because what they use in America (I e mailed Steven Karch for an update - was nice he replied) A friend of mine from the Army does so love Absinthe, not for me however. I too love his way of putting things in a simple enough way that I can understand. I'd love to go and meet him.
Ah well here we go it came and I've had a flick through and now I'm starting at the beginning. I thought this quite funny to measure Cocaine use waste water plants were checked for Cocaine - in Dublin 2kg of Cocaine passes through the waste water treatment plant daily. 10% of Cocaine is excreted in urine and so the researchers could estimate the amount of Cocaine used in the Dublin area
very exciting.. hopefully my copy is waiting for me at the surgery. I need to finish all these christmas present books, to make room on my bedside table for Karch.

The Third edition of Karch was mostly taken up by cocaine - a riveting account. It's good to see that it's not only me who buys the expensive books. I like you all am a great fan of Karch.

The structural formula for cocaine on page 2 can't be right - I know that most of you are not concerned with the structure - just the effects, but for a chemist it rankles a bit, especially as Karch has used Susan Budavari in the Merck Index as his source for all the constants that head the various chapters.
