Would appreciate peoples thoughts on how much Heroin/Script would be suitable for an individual to commence work, or not as the case may be? Thank you.

Hi It's not too clear what you are asking but I think you are asking does it matter what amount of Methadone/Buprenorphine someone takes if they want to work.
The amounts will not matter but the atability of the person will. There is no reason why someone who is stable on a prescription cannot work.

People frequently ask for "sick notes" "because I am on methadone?" and i explain that taking a stable dose of opiates is entirely compatible working in almost all areas. I think airline pilots might struggle to persuade their authorities that they were safe, and probably submarine commanders.

Of course many opiate users are not fit for work for other reasons, but exact dose of methadone/heroin/buprenorphine would not be the deciding factor.

Hi Judith, thank you for your advice, much appreciated. I'm working as an employment advisor for people with drug/alcohol issues,I have my own ideas about what is or is not suitable but always think it a good idea to hear other peoples advice/experiences.

I would say it depends on the person passion for wanting to work as the sky is the limit in my experience.

Hi Will-C, I feel that its quite possible for people to work whilst on a stable script. I think it is much harder to say an exact amount of medication, as every individual is obviously different. i.e. 40mls of Methadone may be fine for some but too much for others. In certain circumstances it may be too dangerous to work whilst on a script, crane driver, pilot, lorry driver? I had a guy in a few days ago who wanted to work as a HGV driver, he said he was on 140mls of Methadone and using 3 x £10 bags of Heroin daily on top!

I dont if thats popular however my theory is if you feel crap get a crap job and when you feel better you will get a better job and so on.

I think the guy who wants to be a HGV driver probably has a realistic goal and a challenge to get there considering the DVLA restrictions, especially more so, when the new drug testing comes into action across the country, where the police will be testing for the levels of substances in people.
On a side note; I would be interesting to know the science behind this.
For me its all about life and job coaching and matching peoples desires up with the current realities and assisting them to pull down the limitations they have been set or argue for.
I also think drug users have been left for too long on the unemployable heap, chasing sick note after sick note to maintain their benefits.
