Hello, All,

Has anyone experience of running a variant of a shared care scheme, focusing on pharmacist supplementary prescribers working out of their pharmacy premises, and supported by an independent prescriber in a CDS?

I'm interested in setting this up in leeds, and would be grateful for any information about how any existing schemes work (or problems they've encountered), and ideas about relevant training, experience and competence for pharmacists for this work, beyond the supplementary prescribing course, which I don't think would give a broad enough preparation.
Thanks,
Jez

The pharmacists in our supervised scheme aren't prescribers, but they have all done at least part 1 of the RCGP course - most have also done part 2. Personally having done both the RCGP Certificate course and the prescribing course I think the RCGP course is of more use in substance misuse, although one has to jump through the hoop of the prescribing course in order to sign scripts!

I only know one Pharmacist supplimentary prescriber (he's posted on here before). He's already told me he doesn't mind being contacted, he woprks in a shared care scheme. He's called Tony Schofield (no relation to Penny) and he's from Gateshead.

One of the main problems community pharmacists have with doing the SP prescribing course is funding. Not only do they need to fund the course but they need a locum to cover, which is expensive and ? to fund the IP prescriber aswell.
