I thought I would share an unfortunate incident that a colleague passed on to me.

' A nurse prescriber in general practice who has recently completed the prescribing course, started prescribing without
having registered with the NMC or the Prescription Pricing Authority. The PPA alerted the trust fairly swiftly, once they identified this.

The incident is going through the PCTs clinical governance system and NMC. Despite having a policy and process in place and the nurse had this, she still failed to register. The GP

set her up on the software system once she received confirmation of her results and presto she started prescribing.

The PPA mentioned that this isn't the first time this has

happened nationally. The onset of computer printed prescriptions has meant that NMPs set themselves up on the GP software system and fail to register with the PPA.'

Mak sure that anyone who is thinking of becoming or employing a non medical prescriber knows the procedure.

The registration form needs signing by the non-medical lead to register with the PPA and doesn't take long anyway.

I had another thought about this. If we were given a prescriber number the same as Doctors this would need inputting onto the system.
If the number wasn't inputted the computer would say No!.
