Dear All
With Clinical Governance and clinical accountability being something we all need to be proactive in updating etc, I am on the look out for examples of guidelines for clinical supervision provided either for or by PwSIs (GPs, nurses and drugs workers)working in primary care. Also, if a clinical supervisor is employed on asessional basis, does anyone have an example of a JD? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jane |

funny you should metnion this jane, one of the questions we posed in the NTA's draft Clinical governance Good Practice Briefing is whether or not there shoudld be an appendix specifially devoted to this topic. So far only one response has addressed the question! (in the affirmative)
Just in case you didn't know the deadline for responses is now only 4 weeks away - May 14th!! |

We have PCT guidance on what supervision should consist of, and more .... I will search the document out and see if I am allowed to circulate it ..... I daresay other PCT's have the same sort of guidance. There isn't a lot of formal teaching on how to be a good supervisor, or maybe it gets lost amongst all the other training sessions we have to try to find time for, but it would make sense to have basic guidance available. Coincidentally I was thinking of going on a course which combines supervision techniques with a psychotherapeutic approach, at the local Centre for training in Psychotherpy. They use TA ( transactional analysis ) too, which is really quite interesting and applies to both clinical work and management...... double whammy ! Susi - do you have the address to reply to the draft clinical governance guidance ?

If you don't post it here could you e-mail me a copy - I'm in your patch Tuesdays and Fridays and haven't seen a copy. There is some NPA guidance on supervising Subutex, water first and something for the client to read. AFAIK the pharmacy has never actually signed up to the supervision scheme (as the contract didn't seem to allow the refusal of clients) and therefore doesn't claim payment.
Are local locum pharmacists able to attend? (hint) Jeff |

Hi Jeff - nice to speak to you. We may be getting crossed wires here - I picked up the thread assuming it was about clinical supervision from / by one colleague / line manager to another - I think you are talking about supervised consumption of meds. However, we do have a local Community pharmacy liaison post within the PCT, and I can forward the detials to you by email. The supervised consumption scheme does have protocols etc. which, if you haven't seen them , would be useful. Best wishes
Gill PS the course is an independent one, run at Leeds Psychotherapy training institute ( LPTI ) quite expensive, it is £500 for the clinical supervision certificate, held over 5 full working days ( spread out over a month or so ). I am looking into its validity etc. but I can recommend their approach based on doing a short TA course there. |
